We at Kempster Durban South had a fun filled day with our clients and Ford SA where we were taught different techniques and Ford Driving Skills for Life. We set up breakfast, started the training and watched a video which we all found very interesting. We were split into groups and the trainers then taught us the different skills and techniques in the vehicles, we were all blown away by the awesome experience and finished the day off with lovely Hamburgers. Some history of  Driving Skills. Ford Established in 2003 by the Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association, and a panel of safety experts created the Ford Driving Skills for Life program (Ford DSFL) which teaches drivers of all ages the necessary skills for safe driving beyond what they learn in standard driving school program. The program is international in scope touching not only South Africa but many areas around the world. The basic premise behind Ford Driving Skills for Life is to provide a step in the learning process, providing new skills and information not currently shared with newly licensed drivers in the basic driver education courses. Training is conducted in a hands-on curriculum and the entire program is available free of charge. Training conducted under the Ford Driving Skills for Life program addresses the inexperience factor as well as issues surrounding distracted driving and fuel efficient driving tips. Results over the past ten years of this effort have been outstanding. Ford DSFL helps drivers improve their skills in four key areas that are critical factors in more than 60% of vehicle crashes including the below activities;

OUT IN THE WILD

When we launched the New Ranger just over two months ago it was only fitting that we make a date to take this amazing vehicle out on the dirt road for a little fun. And man did we show off? Our fleet department was unable to share in on the fun at our dealer launch therefore making a day specifically for our fleet customers was absolutely key. De Wildt 4X4 Game Farm was the chosen and perfect location, joining us was our partners at Indwe Risk Services our official partners on the day. CMH Ford Hatfield together with Indwe Risk Services invited a total of 30 of their corporate customers out to enjoy this amazing experience. Relevant tracks were identified, and the guests were split into groups of four. We decided to give our corporate customers the best of both worlds by allowing them to drive both the New Ford Ranger 2litre Bi-Turbo Auto and the previous shape 3.2 Ford Ranger XLT Auto. The idea was to highlight some of the differences in the newer model as opposed to the older model. Meet our very OWN Finance and Insurance Lady in the used cars department Christine Theunissen, Christine has been with us for over 38 years (No like seriously).

Christine was only 21 years old when she started off as an F&I and joined our branch, she was young and ambitious and knew exactly what she wanted. Nothing was going to stop her as she knew where she wanted to be.

Christine says she can literally do her job with her eyes closed, that’s how great she is at what she does, she says she could never see herself doing anything else. Over the years she learned that people come to the dealership trusting us and people need to walk out with their hopes reached.

Texting While Driving? It’s Like Driving with Your Eyes Closed

• Talking on cell phones – handheld or hands-free – affects our driving
• Hands-free devices do not eliminate distraction
• It’s important to abandon hands-free even though the law permits it

Every text and selfies which captures your attention for even a second can diminish your awareness while driving. It can be hazardous to you and those around you. Yes, this kind of negligence can cause an accident and that’s one accident too many. The reality is that every time you pick up your phone while driving, you see and concentrate less. You stop watching your surrounding environment – in front, behind, to the right and left. Your field of vision shrinks. This neglect can even cause you miss what is right in front of you.

Brain drain

Research shows that the brain cannot handle processing two tasks simultaneously effectively. It can switch between the tasks however your reaction time is diminished while these actions are being performed. Many people think they can do two things at once but it’s just not possible to concentrate fully on both simultaneously. Drivers stop monitoring their environment and new drivers in particular aren’t in the habit of scanning the road for hazards. Dividing your attention for even a second makes for an even more dangerous combination. Derek Kirkby, Training Director for Ford’s global Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) programme in South Africa, says: “In my experience of training hundreds of drivers, I’d say that even normal, everyday driving uses around 85 per cent of your mental load. Sending one text or selfie, and even talking with a passenger, can overload the brain while driving – increasing the risk of an accident.” “When you’re using 85 per cent of your brainpower to drive, your mind isn’t capable of doing much else,” adds Kirkby. “Regardless of whether you’re a professional or new to the road – you will be a safer driver if you understand how much of your brain you’re using just to drive the car.”

Whether you are planning on going to the coast this coming Long weekend or the bushveld, there are certain precautions that you can take when travelling by vehicle to ensure that your trip runs as smooth as possible.

Here at CMH Kempster Ford Umhlanga, our workshop offers an inspection for your vehicle, so make sure that you phone us on 087 724 8040 and ask for one of our service consultants to book an inspection for your vehicle.

If you aren’t in the position to book your vehicle in with us, but still planning on going on a long trip, here are some steps that you can follow to help you drive safe and avoid any breakdowns or mechanical issues;

1. Check the fluids in your car. Checking the oil, coolant, brake fluid and windscreen wash levels may help you avoid an accident or an unnecessary breakdown. Also check the levels for the clutch fluid (often the same as brake fluid) and power steering fluid (if fitted to your car). Refer to your owner’s manual to see where fluid reservoirs are located.


2. Check your air pressure. These should be printed in the owner’s manual or a sticker on the body where the driver’s door shuts. The pressure marked on the side of the tire is the max, which must not be exceeded. Also, don’t forget to check your spare tire pressure. Often neglected, not doing so will turn a bad time into a worse one if the spare is unusable.


3. Get the oil changed before you leave if it’s almost time for a change. A long trip can put additional stress on your motor. Don’t think that adding extra oil by yourself will work like an oil change because that does not get rid of the sludge from old used oil. You may not realize this due to the fact that you are continuously adding new, cleaner oil which makes it appear as if it is clean oil. When changing your car’s oil, you must always replace the oil filter at the same time.


4. Check your tire wear. Ensure you have at least 1/16th” or 1.6mm tread left. If the tread is less than 1/12”³ or 2.5mm, consider replacing your tires for very long journeys as they will wear down more quickly. Tires heat up on long trips which can cause blowouts on worn out tires.


5. Check your car’s air filter. A plentiful supply of clean air to your engine improves the vehicle’s performance and efficiency. Also check and change your car’s cabin (pollen) filter if it has one, as these are often ignored in services and, if worn, adversely affect the quality of air in the cabin.


6. Check to be certain that all lights and signals are functional on your car. You may need the help of another person for this. Sit in the car, turn on each light or signal and ask your friend to tell you if it is working or not. Replace bulbs as necessary. Also, consider carrying spare bulbs on a road trip.


7. Ensure that you have all emergency equipment inside your car and that everything works properly. Emergency equipment includes an up-to-date map or GPS, a cell phone, spare tire, a puncture repair kit, jumper cables and emergency tools like a flashlight, screwdrivers, pliers and an adjustable spanner.

On the 30th June 2018 Kempster Durban South celebrated the Welcoming of the Whale festival at Brighten Beach, Bluff. It was a buzz of excitement with all sorts of vendors, beach games, rides for the kids, fashion shows and music. Joining us was Gabriel Sithole who is our Ford Wildlife Foundation Brand Ambassador and Stuart Laing from Oceanographic research institute.

This was a very special day for us at Kempster Durban South as we have jumped on board with Sodurba Tourism as a sponsored partner to collect funds to open the old Union Whaling Factory and converting it into a Museum. Fabricon came on board making the Armature which was made of brushed stainless steel and the pupils of Eden Schools got involved with the processing of the recycled bottle tops supplied by the community and SmartMatta and attaching these to bonox fencing panels to create the cladding for the final effect.

All the prepping was done at Eden School, where we had a competition amongst the kids – they were to draw a picture of a whale and we chose the best picture and turned her into a 3-meter sculpture named Destiny. Mike Mc Fadyean did the final design of Destiny and sat with Robin and Jackie from Umcebo designs and put the plan of the whale together.
