Sheer acceleration with a Ford ST

Although Ford has been mass-producing SUVs and utility vans for more than a century, it has also been competing admirably against German competitors in the performance-orientated class. And unlike other manufacturers in this sector, Ford has opted for basic engines, utility wheels, comfortable seats, CD audio and air-conditioning for a price that won’t leave you mortgaging your home in the pursuit of owning one of their vehicles.

Previously dubbed “XR” and later “RS”, the Ford ST or Sports Technologies cars are produced by Ford’s winning TeamRS organisation. And hardly disappointing adrenaline enthusiasts, these affordable “fun” cars – which accelerate easily and deliver torque across an expanded rev range – are truly exhilarating to drive. Even if you’re only out cruising for the day with the kids, Ford ST models, which are available in the Ford Focus ST, Fiesta ST and Territory ST, are fine examples of American motorsport technology. The iconic orange Ford Focus ST is equipped with a five-cylinder 2.5-litre turbocharged Duratec engine that delivers 166kW at 6000rpm. With its slick six-speed manual transmission, the sporty Focus ST can reach 100 kilometres per hour in under eight seconds, and its top speed is capped at a mouth-watering 240 kilometres per hour. Focussing on maximum handling and control, Ford installed its award-winning rigid chassis in the Focus range, complementing the Ford Focus ST’s powerful acceleration and ensuring that all four wheels remain exactly where they’re designed to be: on the tarmac.

Based on Ford’s World Rally Championship project, the Focus ST pays homage to sport racing via its squat tyres, sharp edges and brushed aluminium finishes. The rear spoiler and side mouldings have an aerodynamic effect, while the coloured-in mirrors and door handles smooth the overall finish. The performance theme is continued in the interior via comfortably moulded sports seats with a high beltline, a small windscreen and contoured instrument panel and centre console, along with performance pedals fitted with rubber pads in cast aluminium.

As the entry level car in the ST range, the Ford Fiesta ST has a 2.0-litre Duratec petrol engine, which delivers 110kW at 6000rpm, and a top speed of 203 kilometres per hour. Available in a three-door hatchback with five-speed manual transmission, the zippy Fiesta ST has a cost-effective fuel consumption of 9.1 litres per 100 kilometres of mixed city and highway driving. And not forgetting those who enjoy a bit of speed: the Fiesta ST will reach 100 kilometres per hour in 8 seconds.

Visually, the Fiesta ST is distinctive on the road owing to its honeycomb mesh grille, racing stripes and 17-inch alloy wheels. The Fiesta ST interior matches the overall larger-than-life design theme with deep-set, bolstered racing seats, a leather steering wheel, aluminium sports pedals and a sports gear lever. Combine this short-shift gear lever with the Ford Fiesta ST’s rigid chassis, large brake discs, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brake Distribution and razor-sharp steering, and the Fiesta ST is every racer’s dream-come-true, bracketed in a mid-price range.

Much like the other popular Ford Territory vehicles – such as its Ghia all-wheel drive equivalent – the new Ford Territory ST delivers sporty crossover features, although with additional towing capability, drive quality and exceptional instrument standard. Equipped with a 4.0-litre turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum of 245kW at 5250rpm, the Ford Territory ST is a performance-orientated sedan with flawless straight-line acceleration and zero-body roll. This is owing in part to its standard Acutrac Plus Suspension, which combines an Electronic Stability Programme system with Dynamic Stability Control in order to intervene during critical cornering situations.

The Territory ST can be set apart from other Ford Territory cars by the scoop on its bonnet and dual exhausts – which lend it an unmistakably sporty appeal. Added to this, its diamond mesh grille, big 18-inch alloy wheels and Territory ST badges set it at a cut above the rest in terms of exterior style. Comfortable leather seats are complemented by brushed aluminium dials that give speed and rev readouts, and the six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat is suitable for long safari drives or commuting in the city.

Recommended for their sporty engines and performance features, Ford ST cars also have exterior touches – such as stylish ST badges – and interior conveniences – such as ample storage compartments, which include a lockable pocket under the driver’s seat and a dishwasher-safe rubbish bin. These small and convenient extras lend an added appeal to cars that are not only speedy, but luxurious as well.
